Nyota Ndogo, born Mwanaisha Abdalla around 1981 in Mombasa, Kenya, is a renowned musician known for her taarab-influenced pop music. Starting from humble beginnings as a school dropout and housemaid, Nyota Ndogo’s journey into music was inspired by the hip hop group K-South. Her breakthrough came when she was discovered by Mombasa-based producer Andrew Burchell.

Nyota Ndogo has a distinguished career with several successful albums, including Chereko, Nimetoka Mbali Mpenzi, and Mama Wakambo. Her notable achievements include winning the Kisima Award for Best Taarab Singer in 2003 and Best Female Singer in 2005. She has also been nominated for several awards, including the PAM Awards and Tanzania Music Awards. Her song “Watu na Viatu” was particularly recognized as one of the best East African songs.
Nyota’s international presence includes performances at major festivals like Sauti za Busara and ZIFF in Zanzibar, as well as in Dubai, Germany, and South Africa. She has collaborated with various East African artists, including Nonini, Necessary Noize, Ally B, Q Chilla, Mr. Blue, Tember, and Bobby Mapesa. Her song “Je Wewe,” released on February 29, 2020, received acclaim and positive feedback from fans and radio stations.
